Star Trek Online

I'm currently playing the beta test version of this game, it's due to go live on 02/02/2010. So far it's a lot of fun and, since Anarchy Online won't currently run on my computer, it looks like it will be my online science fiction drug of choice for the foreseeable future.

Star Trek Online is being developed by Cryptic Studios, it is a MMORPG where players can be either Federation or Klingon starship captains. If you take out a lifetime subscription you can be a Borg too. The game is big and involving with a vast amount of customising options for your characters, their ships and their crews. I will endeavour over the coming months to post interesting highlights of my adventures.

In the few days I've been playing I've had space battles with Klingons, Orion Pirates and other assorted nasty types; I've beamed down and fought on planets, through the corridors of space stations and in other space ships. All of which has been a lot of fun.

For my first post here though I thought I'd show you some pictures from my first exploration voyage where I went off to 'Explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before...'

Captain's log Stardate 24.01.2010

The USS Sylvester approaches the first unexplored planet that I find.

I assemble my landing party from my available bridge officers, everyone is equipped with heavy phaser rifles, body armour and personal shields. We've learnt from experience to always go in mob-handed and armed to the teeth. We find some odd alien artifact that's emitting a harmful radiation so we disable it and look for more.

Our scans locate a few more and we neutralise them too. No harmful life forms and no need for the guns, not much regard for the Prime Directive either as we tamper with the unknown devices.

Returning to the ship we continue, scanning and recording some anomolous readings in an asteroid cloud. We beam aboard some alien samples for the techies back at Starfleet to tinker with.

Obviously pleased with our work the powers that be direct us towards a colony planet that's having trouble with some non-corporeal life forms.

Guns out again. Unfortunately we find we can sort them out with tricorders so, once again, the phaser batteries remain fully charged. Never mind, there's always next time...

Beta testing ended yesterday with a Borg invasion of the Space Dock orbitting Earth. I had a lot of fun killing Borg and dying and I'm eagerly awaiting the launch so I can play again. Here are some screenshots of the action.

And finally, another of those spectacular planets.
