Outpost Gamma by Dwarfstar Games
I came across this game as a free download the other day. I used to have the board game long ago and enjoyed playing it. It always reminded me of Walt Simonson’s Star Slammers and, of course, there are overtones of Heinlein’s Starship Troopers in it too.
Now, Mongoose Publishing makes a Starship Troopers range and I do like the look of the power-suited Troopers they make but I don’t want to play the game and I don’t want to paint hundreds of bugs either.
Rod at Alpha Forge Games makes a new range of blind goblins called Yagamuna which I also like very much but have no current use for.
I want to make some general purpose rough terrain boards for use with several skirmish games.
It looks to me that all three of the above ‘wants’ are serviced by Outpost Gamma. I can use the two types of Power-armoured Troopers for the Legionnaires, the Yagamuna as Irdan rebels and make a nice, versatile, 4’ x 4’ board (in 2’ x 2’ sections for storage) recreating the game map in 3D. I have some rather nice Heresy Crewmen to be the Miners too.
Here’s what figures the game requires:
Legionnaires
These will be basic Legionnaires.
and these will be the Heavy Weapons and Leader.
Both photos from Mongoose's site
7 Troopers
2 Heavy weapons
1 Commander
6 miners
Irdans
these will be the Rebels and Shooters. There's also a Shaman figure that will make a good Leader.
Photos from Alpha Forge's website
Each rebel figure represents one, two, or three actual rebel groups and will be numbered under the base to show which it is. The board game has hidden stacked counters and this will go some way to representing that on the tabletop.
2 leaders
8 Shooters (2 x 3, 3 x2, 3 x 1)
45 Rebels (15 x 3, 15 x 2, 15 x 1)
Markers
10 Disruption markers
4 Barricades
4 Bunkers
2 Optic sights
6 small Energy storms*
6 large energy storms*
*I plan to make these like mushroom clouds on stalks that will lift them above the height of the figures but still allow me to make them the correct diameter. The large storms will be about ten inches across.
Total figures
16 Imperial
55 Rebels
The Boardgame
This is the game map. If I tranlate each hex to a 50mm offset square the whole board will be 1050mm high by 1100mm wide, smaller than 4' x 4' (1200mm x 120mm). I won't have squares on the map, movement and ranges will be measured and I will add space to the edges so it fills a 1200mm x 1200mm area.
