17 March 2006 Varnishing Disaster
Today was the day
I planned to update my galleries with pictures of all the figures I've
painted this year. I preparation for this I arranged a tray of my
figures that needed varnishing and set it up outside ready for a quick
spray. Everything went well and I came back inside to get my U.N.I.T.
troops ready for the same treatment. Imagine my surprise (as they say)
when I went to fetch the first tray and found this.....

Everything was covered in an even white film. You can see it best on the base tray.
So,
everything I've painted this year with the exception of my U.N.I.T.
troops is ruined. That's 10 Westwind zombies, 10 Fortress figures
zombies, 8 Copplestone penguins, 6 Redoubt Sudan British Rifles, 12
Redoubt Egyptians and their gun.
I managed to save the APAC Heavy
I'd painted for Rezolution because he's a large figure and I could
brush off the white residue without damaging the paint too much. He
still looks very dusty though but I can live with that.
Everything
else is in the bin. I'll re-order the Redoubt figures and the Westwind
zombies and paint them again but I won't put in an overseas order for
the Fortress zombies so they're gone for good.
At least the U.N.I.T. figures are ok. I am very aprehensive about varnishing them this weekend but it has to be done.
*****UPDATE*****
I
originally thought the bad results were because it was too cold when I
did the varnishing but today it was perfect conditions and the same can
of varnish misted badly again. Luckily I was testing it first so no
more figures were lost. Another can of Humbrol worked fine so it was a
bad batch originally. Thanks Humbrol! I suppose I'd better test each
time from now on
I'd
like to thank everyone who offered a solution or remedy for my little
mishap. Unfortunately none of the usual ways of rectifying the problem
worked. Overspraying again didn't work. I managed to clear the white
deposit off a couple of the figures that I tried to fix but all the
solvents removed the ink from the figures as well. Since I cant replace
the ink without repainting the model, because it's the darkest shade
tone and goes on first, it was easier and quicker to just buy new
versions and start from scratch. As I type this (April 06) the damaged
figures are sailing off to their new home in America. I hope they'll be
very happy there and will write when they've recovered from their
ordeals. I'll keep you updated on their progress...................

The miniatures reached LeadAsbestos safely and, I'm happy to report, he has managed to rescue them all.
A happy ending to a sad tale.
Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.
