I've decided to go with Britannia Miniatures figures because I like them and they're easy to paint. Here's my buying list:

46 Americans and 4 Vehicles
62 Somalis, 1 Gun and 3 Vehicles
TOTAL 109 figures and 7 vehicles £164.95

These will be grouped/based as follows, the Crossfire dice values are just ideas at present and may be adjusted down. However I think they'll give me the feel and balance I'm looking for allowing that the Somalis will be recycled in waves.
Time and play testing will tell. Platoon Commanders are integral for trained troops, unlike regular Crossfire, but Company commanders are separate. Irregulars have separate PCs to reflect the importance of charismatic leaders. The final based groups should look like 'stepped down' units as in the original Crossfire; that is, a 'platoon' will actually look like a 1:1 section or squad and a 'company' will look like a 1:1 platoon (give or take) and so the visual appeal of the game will, I hope, remain high.

This photo shows all the vehicles including three wrecked cars from Old Crow and the civilians, POWs, and casualties for both sides.

The figures are based on 3mm plywood bases from Litko Aerosystems. The infantry are on 60mm round bases, the support weapons are on 50mm ones and the command figures, casualties and civilians are on 40mm bases. Nothing will be glued down until they're painted though, at the moment they're just balancing on them.
