I have been mulling over the idea of getting a set of "Wargamming" rules for the last couple of months. Now when it comes to this i am totally in the dark!!,i have seen the "future war commander/ambush alley" books, but where do i start ??.I know Paul mentions using the "crossfire rules" alot and seems to use them for all his games??.Or do most of you write your own rule sets ??,or just expanded current written rules ??.
I am looking for something to cover small skirmish battles, small unit actions,modern/far future weapons and troop types,or anything that will also cover "zombies/alien invasions" modern forces fighting off "ghosts/demons".I am sure that i can be helped because the wealth of knowledge on here is astounding!!.
Cheers tony:) | |

Hmmmm.... pretty broad spectrum there. A catch-all game would be 5150 or ATZ from Two Hour Wargames. The Reaction Mechanic requires a bit of adjustment, but they're fun. Ambush Alley or Force on Force are straight up combat - no horror/supernatural. Paul swears by Crossfire, so he's the expert there. Future War Commander is for large scale battles with 6mm and 15mm, altho there're rules for 28mm. But again, no horror element. If you want one single rule set to accomodate all the variables, my vote would be Two Hour Wargames. http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/index.html Free games here: http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/free.html Best of Luck

Ambush Alley covers everything you want, their Zombie rules are available I think and the Sci Fi ones are on the way. The basic book covers insurrection warfare, you need to buy the supplements to expand the scope but they are all available as downloads and the basic system is sound and easily grasped. You don't need many figures to start either. The basic rules are free to download, the buyable version contains more info and rules for more situations. I have a report of the introductory scenario courtesy of Dougie here
I can't find the free download introductory version on their site so mail me and I send you a copy of mine.

Hi Tony,
To blow my own trumpet have you tried Forge of War yet? This was designed for small unit actions, such as you describe, in a SF/Modern environment.
The second edition is out and has generic troop listings that are easily adaptable to the periods you described.
The rules are on the blog (http://thegamesshed.wordpress.com] and there is the Yahoo! group if you want to discuss or expand on anything.
Oh yes, and they are free
Cheers, Craig. | |

D'oh! I forgot about AA's "Ambush Z". I'll certainly look into their Sci Fi rules if/when they're produced.
